Life Hacker conducted a poll in which utorrent grabbed the first place with 65% of the total votes. I use the same, light weight tool to download torrents too.
Download torrents via rss
Mininova has a RSS feature which is supported by Utorrent. I mostly use mininova and utorrent to download torrents, thus I write about them more. There is a feed for torrents under a particular category in mininova. Newly added torrents will automatically be added on to utorrent for download. This will help all the constant downloaders with high speed internet.
Go to a category, sub-category or a search result and right click the orange rss button. Select copy link location.
Click on the orange rss button in Utorrent.
Add the feed URL in the Rss Downloader.
New torrents under a particular category will be automatically added and will be downloaded.
- Its useful for all the constant downloaders.
- Latest movies/music/pictures can be automatically downloaded to form a large collection.
When a large category is selected there is a chance of duplicate copies being downloaded, you’ll have to check for it from time to time.

In my last post I told you about making a video screen capture and in this post I have used that technique to show you how to download torrents using mininova and utorrent.
Mininova is a bittorrent tracker, it was called as supernova before an now the name has changed. It is one of the largest torrent trackers along with The Pirate Bay. I used Mininova because of its clean interface, it does not matter where you download the torrent from, the speed of the torrent depends on the number of seeds, more the seeds more the speed.
Utorrent is a software which can download the torrents. You have to add a torrent in it and it will use the trackers mentioned in the torrents to find seeds and peers and downloads the file for you. It is a need, light weight, free and a handy tool for file sharing and distribution. There is always misuse of good things, it happens with this too.
Most of the torrents on these websites are not legal so please be careful when you download torrents. Downloading copyrighted material is infrigment to IP and is a serious criminal offence but most of the people uploading or downloading torrents don’t care about it. I use torrents to download photographs by people, torrents are one of the best ways to distribute a large set of high quality photographs on a particular topic.
Websites like The Pirate Bay were sued many times and the house of the owner was also raided once but they really don’t care. Owner of the pirate bay lives in Sweden. According to Swedish laws websites like The Pirate Bay are legal and are not stealing intellectual property. It is correct actually, you can sue the makers of a gun company because it was used to kill someone, similarly these websites don’t ask people to upload copyrighted material, so when people do it, the companies should go after the ones who are seeding the files. This is my opinion, the companies might have a different point of view.
Reading the emails from companies to torrent websites was real funny. They use all hi-fi language to convince the owners to remove a torrent. Its best if they just say don’t allow people to download torrents which contain our software, intellectual property.
So coming back to how to download torrents, its pretty simple. First you need to download the torrent file from a website like Mininova.org then you’ll need a software like utorrent. Add the torrent file to utorrent and do as shown in the video.
The video has a pretty ok music and I didn’t fade away the music in the end, it just stops, sorry about that, I didn’t have time. Then I open scheduler settings in the last, you don’t have to do it, it was me starting the torrent, before it was scheduled to download from 2 am - 8 am, thats when the internet is free here. Any how the video serves its purpose of showing you how to download torrents.

I also uploaded this video to rapidshare. The rapidshare version is of a better quality so that you can watch it in detail or modify the video and reupload it, yes you are free to do that. Agian I am telling you that downloading intellectual property without proper permission is illegal in the US and some other countries. The RIAA has already sued many people for downloading music files, a person downloading a torrent can be easily tracked. If some day they decide to track people using a particular torrent and they track you down, you can be sued (if you are the main seed).
